Recession problem, Coates solution

We are in a recession; its official because they said so. They are the National Bureau of Economic Research.

Yesterday the National Bureau of Economic Research stated that we have been in a recession since last December. I guess we weren’t paying attention. It would be a good thing if more of us began monitoring this sort of thing so that we have a early warning to problems. I wonder how that’ll work out.

On a more personal note, I’ve been noticing that my spending habits have been very erratic for the past few years. It started with my lunch time food purchases and grew to my twice to thrice weekly Wal-Mart runs.

The simple truth is that I need to be more responsible with my spending. I cannot afford to go out to eat several times a week. I need to not continually purchase movies. I should not sign up for numerous subscriptions… most of which are underused anyway.

If you call me and I say that I am staying in, I expect that you will respect that. You can come visit me but, I am basically fitting on pulling a Coates.

DefEx: amicably

I found the word “amicably” in a book by Osamu Ikeno titled The Japanese Mind, a book that I’ve been reading on and off for the past few years.

They (Japanese) prefer to reach a solution as amicably as possible, and there is a tendency to compromise with others by laying groundwork, referred to in Japanese as nemawashi (根回し 「ねまわし」), before reaching a final agreement.

Amicable is an adjective that according to The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition, refers to something being “characterized by or exhibiting friendliness or goodwill; friendly”.

Amicably is the adverb form of amicable. One country forming a treaty with another may be thought of as an amicable resolve.

The book covers 28 attributes of Japanese culture through twenty-eight essays dedicated to each of the topics. I bought it from GreenTea Designs in Georgetown (202-625-6298) . Here is a picture of the book; it links to Amazon. It currently sells for its list price of $14.95. As of right now, used copies are available from $6.54 and new copies from third party sellers are available as low as $9.87. If you are interested in Japanese culture or watch Japanese cinema or anime, consider picking this book up.

Carnival mirrors

I visited one of my friends at her apartment over the weekend. She spent the day indoors getting drunk and chain smoking cigarettes due to a set of depressive thoughts she’d been having about her life. I’ve done that before.

No matter how much I tried to get her to get up so that she could get some fresh(er) air, she’d just sit there staring at the tele and going between the chiller for a beer, the pack of cigarettes and the bathroom (her bodies attempt to detox). Due to this repetitive cycle and my not receiving any attention I fell asleep. She woke me up by pouncing on me… because I was being rude by sleeping. (.o0Gwaah?)

In my half awoken state, I continued trying to get her to put on some shoes so that we could leave. The result was that I had to put her shoes on for her so that we could go to the car.

After we made it to Fell’s Point, she spent most of the time talking about how she desired that her life would end. She didn’t really care how she’d die, she just wanted to die. Some of the things that she said were extremely similar to thoughts that I’ve had in the past and may have said as a teenager. Besides being saddened by the fact that someone else was going through this, I felt that I was in lack as I didn’t know what to do to help.

I’m thinking about it now and realize that I would have rolled out very quickly upon hearing such speak if I had not gone through this myself.

Regardless of how cold my exterior is, I do experience pain when those who are close to me suffer… even those who I’m not on the best terms with.

Want more? Waste not.

Alice just sent me a link to a video about a guy known as Sustainable Dave, who is doing a study/lesson on consumption. He and his family are making the action to save all of their trash for a year to show how much waste we are capable of producing. He also offers a few tips on things we can do to help the environment; many of these methods do not require a major lifestyle adjustment.

She gave me another video about “The Story of Stuff” that discusses how there are so many things that we use daily that resolve to wasted materials.

This video is by Annie Leonard. You can view the full 20 minute video and find more information on this site: http://www.storyofstuff.com/

Many things that we throw away could be repurposed to at least slow the the growth of the many collections of trash that we have.

Wrongful incarceration

Out of curiosity, if a person is sent to prison and serves a term for a crime that they are not guilty of, does that give them a free pass to commit the crime at a later date? After all the time had already been served.

I do not know what to title this post

I’ve been known to be a rather liberal person during my lifetime. These days, the constant bend toward the notion of being liberal makes me feel to be somewhat of a conservative sort. I am one of those people. A fan of Proposition 8. I don’t live in Cali so I didn’t vote on the matter. I also didn’t solicit votes on the matter. I actually expected the California would be in favor of the redefinition of marriage as they were one of the first on this bandwagon. I was upset when they began to allow gay marriage over there. Though California offered a pleasant surprise, Connecticut saddened me. However, I am now beyond being upset. This guy ran off and likened this so-called injustice toward gays to the plight of African-Americans.

These issues aren’t nearly in the same functional space. First off, prohibiting liberties to someone based on their race and their sexual preference are not equal limitations. There is no person of any race who had the opportunity to be born of another race. If you disagree, find one for me; I’d enjoy meeting them. However, people can make the choice to lay down with one person or another; this is the case regardless of sexual orientation. It is now common practice to consider it unethical to oppose the so-called freedoms of homosexual. Is it not unethical to argue that this situation is the same as that of the Jewish Holocaust or African-American slavery? How about conflict diamonds? Is the prevention of gay marriage to be equated with this as well?

Lets examine equality for a moment. If you are an American and polling for equality, please acknowledge that you already live better than most people on this planet due to hideous regimes of power which occupy some other lands. Secondly, lets consider the fact that there are many homosexuals with greater far wealth than many heterosexuals. San Francisco is not the most affordable city in this country. I surely can’t afford to live there.  If we were to discuss the arts in this time period, you’d likely find more homosexuals who are knowledgeable about this topic than heteros. There are entire industries which are close to being dominated by homosexuals. This situation is not in any degree the same as that of racial injustice.

Early on, the argument was that gays should be allowed to marry because of the tax breaks or insurance allowances which are imparted upon married couples. If that be the true issue and not some cloak for some other goal… let any cooperative group be afforded the same rights.

Then it became listed as a problem of social equality. The way I hear it now is as if it were a matter of validity. The issue is now that people want to be recognized as having equal relationships to that of the rest of the population. A major factor of a hetero relationship is the means to copulate. There is also this issue of whether or not homosexuals should have the right to have children. Eggs do not await eggs and the sole goal of the sperm is to reach the egg. Do people no longer realize that they have in their bodies the means to create a generation? We are going through this crap because you don’t want to have intercourse with a member of the opposite sex? Or, because you aren’t attracted to the opposite sex?

I know of countless people who seriously do not understand their partners in heterosexual relationships. There is a theory referred to as the 80/20 rule. This theory suggests that in a relationship neither person will provide 100% of the desires of their partner but, the 80% that is given is of greater value than the 20% that is not. I’ve noticed vicariously that in both hetero and homo relationships that people will get along well for a bit and not so well for another span. Yet, this is also the case with non-romantic endeavors. Some people get along well with their bosses for a while and not so much for other periods. With my friends, I am affectionate toward them whether they are male or female, as I do intend to care for friends. This doesn’t mean that we should practice any sort of sex with each other, regardless of whether our parts fit together or not.

As a society, we have an placed a great emphasis on sex. We use it for money. People tend to free themselves for the sake of money. Does being attracted to the opposite sex require the desire to spend time in a titty bar? No. Does it require having intercourse within the first 6 months of knowing a person? No. Does it require any sexual thought toward a person? No. These are the ways that people are marketing what could otherwise be a very simple system of reproduction. Now, unfortunately the pleasure of sex has overtaken the function of sex. I suppose that someone will argue that this is my opinion.

Nobody is saying that homosexuals aren’t human. With the number of homosexuals at my job I find it difficult to believe that employment is a widespread issue. Homosexuals are not denied housing. Some have difficulty understanding that recently churches typically had a problem with acceptance of homosexuality. It is not the place of the church to accept homosexuality. The very doctrine which they follow opposes such practice… this is the case both before and after Christ (Old Testament and New Testament). If you don’t believe me, go read it for yourself. Yet, somehow homosexuals have found themselves in the pulpit. Hogwash. If it were a person who had been previously homosexual and is now reformed, it would make sense. If homosexuals are allowed, eventually prostitues will be also.

Who’s this? Who is this?

I’m pretty sure that everyone occasionally receives a phone call from someone who intends to call someone else. A conversation may be similar to:

Person dialing the number: Hello, is Jamie available?
Person receiving the call:  Nobody who has that name lives here.
Person dialing the number: I’m sorry, have a good evening.

Simple enough.

There are occasions where you may get a phone call from someone who is a little off. Mind you, we cannot blame these people for being off. Perhaps their present circumstances merit such offness. These phone calls follow this pattern:

Person dialing the number: Who’s this?
Person receiving the call: What?
Person dialing the number: Is Jamie there?
Person receiving the call: I’m sorry, you have the wrong number.
Person dialing the number: Ok.

You may notice that this conversation requires an additional relay of speech which was caused by the need to abrade the initial nonsensible greeting. I get a number of these phone calls. This was actually wasn’t that bad. It is when you get the threats for calling some girl that you don’t know and people demanding to speak with people who you do not know that these things become really disturbing.

I hope that I don’t come off like this when I call the wrong number. Of course, I could be overly sensitive.

Social Network Fiendism

I’m not yet a fiend.
I do not desire to be a fiend.
If I continue to sign up… I will be.

I just found out about a site (raptr.com) that is basically a microblog/aggregator for gamers. Gosh!!! Of course I’m going to sign up. This I find just after setting up a twitter account to house my XBOX Live statuses. No worries, I still like my twitter… I’ll just have to audition the new tool.

After I finish this week’s lesson I’ll have time to play around a bit.

WordPress 2.7

Just a note that I am wanting to do the upgrade to WordPress 2.7 asap. I have no gripes with 2.6.x but… the admin console for 2.7 looks friggin sweet.

SDC2|Session 4: Data portability

3:30 - 4:30

Lead by Mark Scrimshire (@ekivemark).

With all of the personal records that exist in the world, there has to be a practical method of grouping the information according to the owner/user.

With options like OpenID and the Higgins Framework, this information could be more easily available. The popular concern with this is security of this information. This could be offset by implementing multifactor authentication.

Who ‘owns’ health records? Who is given access to this information? Who can have access to this information?

This was the only session where I participated verbally.
